"Little Red Book" / Rednote leans wealthy (and fancy ecommerce), unlike douyin (actual PRC tiktok) which is for filthy masses. It's cosmopolitan "cool" which I think actually meshes with some western cohorts well. Curation/vibes kind of a turn off TBH, I personally like my woodworking tutorials mixed with uncles trying to sell barrels of glycerine.
Wow it really doesn't take much to fill people's needs, they are switching to an app that's not even translated yet and the majority of the content is in mandarin as well.
The comments in the play store are pretty wild.
This is a weird development no one seemed to see coming. Wonder if it will get traction or just a overreaction from the TikTokers
This is just an extension of a long lived trend of kids trolling boomers. For example, someone will make a corny fan cam video of a Chinese government leader, with communist flags and symbols waving as an overlay, and the Chinese anthem playing, then the description text will be something like "What Fox News thinks everyone's FYP is like".
Signing up for RedNote is the same thing. Kids are making videos claiming that they are putting their social security number and personal info on RedNote. It's mostly just bait for boomers and US media to eat up. Some people are absolutely signing up for RedNote, but it doesn't seem to be out of legitimate interest, more as a protest meme that they then post about back on TikTok.
If any of these people would bother to read the law, they might see that it also applies to Xiaohongshu.
> RedNote's Chinese name, Xiaohongshu, translates to Little Red Book, but the app says it is not a reference to Chinese communist leader Mao Zedong's book of quotations with the same name.
uh huh
It's more a form of protest. There's not even a Western or English version of the app as far as I know.
Just put on the Android in the EU, starts in English, asks for hobbies and plays an endless stream of bilingual heart warming welcome videos for the American friends.
